Employee Spotlight: Brian — 15+ Years of Experience in IT Relocation
At Murphy, McKay & Associates, the people behind the work are what truly make projects successful. This month, we’re highlighting Brian, a supervisor who has been with the company for over 15 years and has seen the industry evolve firsthand.
A Career Built on Opportunity and Flexibility
Brian’s journey with Murphy, McKay & Associates started during a transitional moment in his life.
After being laid off from a previous role, he decided to take a recommendation from a roommate who already worked at the company. What began as a new opportunity quickly turned into a long-term career.
What kept him here wasn’t just the work — it was the flexibility.
As a single father with shared custody of his son at the time, Brian needed a schedule that could adapt to his life. Murphy McKay provided that.
“Being able to choose what days I worked and what hours I worked allowed me to spend valuable time with my son.”
That balance between work and life became a defining reason he stayed.
How IT Relocation Has Evolved
Over the past 15 years, Brian has seen a major shift in how workplaces are built and moved.
In the past, systems were more complex:
- Phones
- Printers
- Scanners
- Card readers
- Multiple peripherals
Today, setups are far more streamlined — often just:
- Two monitors
- A docking station
This evolution has made relocations more efficient and cleaner.
“Disconnect and reconnect are so much easier now… and setups look better with less clutter and cable management.”
The Lesson That Guides Every Project
One principle has stayed constant throughout Brian’s career:
Be honest and set realistic expectations.
Early on, he learned that both clients and technicians come into projects with assumptions about timelines and outcomes. But in reality, every move is different.
“You must be straight and honest with the client and techs. I always try to meet expectations—but sometimes it’s just not possible.”
That honesty builds trust — and prevents bigger issues down the line.
The Hidden Challenges Clients Don’t Always See
From the outside, an IT move might seem straightforward.
But behind the scenes, there are critical details that can make or break a project — especially when it comes to workspace design.
One of the most common issues Brian sees is a mismatch between aesthetic goals and functionality.
“Companies want systems to look nice, but sometimes don’t have the right setup to make that possible.”
Modern desks and monitor arms often require:
- Longer cables
- Proper power distribution
- Cable management systems (like baskets or nets)
Without these, even the best setups can become messy or inefficient.
What Separates a Smooth Move from a Stressful One
According to Brian, one of the biggest factors in a successful move is simple:
Having the right crew size.
Projects tend to follow a pattern:
- Start slow as teams learn the setup
- Speed up as they find a rhythm
- Slow down again as fatigue sets in
“You can only work so long with your hands. That’s why having the right crew size is critical.”
The right team prevents burnout, avoids delays, and keeps projects on track.
Life Outside of Work
When he’s not managing projects, Brian values time with the people closest to him.
He spends a lot of time with his sister and her family, along with a tight-knit group of friends he considers family.
Some of his favorite ways to unwind include:
- Going out for dinners
- Bowling
- Pickleball and badminton
- Roller skating
He also enjoys staying active, watching sports, and diving into anime.
“The main thing is just spending time with good people.”
A Lasting Impact
After more than 15 years, Brian’s experience, honesty, and leadership continue to shape successful projects and strong client relationships.
His story is a reminder that behind every smooth IT relocation is a team — and people like Brian — making it happen.
